Complete home automation?

conventi answers:

Most of the systems out there that will do what your wanting to do are available only through dealers.
Most of them also will require a programmer. It depends on how much you want automated, and what you want to spend.

The best system out there still is from Crestron, its not cheap it will automate everything. Requires a certified Crestron programmer.

Elan makes a pretty good system, again requires a programmer, a little less costly then Crestron and not as cool and as sophisticated, as Crestron.

For some features like lighting Elan and Crestron still will require additional manufactures products. For lighting Lutron is still the best lighting control and both Crestron and Elan can control Lutron lighting control systems. Crestron apparently has there own lighting control system now don’t know how good it really is everyone I know doing hi-end system lighting is still using Lutron lighting.

The new kid on the block is pretty inexpensive and isn’t bad is from control 4. Now it wont do everything but for most people its pretty good. Doesn’t require any real programming so you can just add each piece as you go and looks and operates pretty good.

Very important to purchase from authorized dealer, someone that has been around for a while, and has years of experience doing these system. Go to one dealer that can do the whole system correctly do not try and piece meal it together as you will run into issues and everyone will be pointing fingers at the other. These are elaborate systems and need one dealer to make sure the system comes together professionally.

As for Audio Video system again only buy from a good hi-end dealer they have much better equipment to choose from and have the knowledge to make sure everything works well together, and sounds good in your room.

Good luck, any questions feel free to ask

Help with homemade home automation?

How can I automate my room by myself? I dont want to buy machines from anywhere, I just want to make it myself. For example, saying lights on and the lights turn on. I have speech recognition software previously installed on my computer. If I need to program, please tell me which language, and perhaps a few tips. Thanks

conventi answers:

I think it is unavoidable that you would have to buy some ‘Smart Home’ hardware.

For example, there is plenty of software that will allow your computer to understand your voice and even activate a command of sorts after it has been told what to do.

However for it to control your lights, there has to be some sort of interface from the PC, or network, that will inform a control system that the lights must be turned off.

Then you need a physical piece of hardware to automatically shut off or turn on the light as commanded.

You may be able to find what we used to call a clapper, which is a light switch that replaces your conventional one and responds to high pitched sounds or clapping of your hands to turn the lighs on/off and vice versa.

You don’t need a robots.txt file at all . . . It’s optional. And since your site is text only, and you want a search engine to find it, you definitely don’t need it. The robots.txt file is to stop search engine crawlers from getting tangled in parts of the site meant only for humans (like the forms for answering questions, or signing up for new accounts, that sort of thing). Also, if you’re on Google and Yahoo you probably don’t need to sign up anywhere else. Have a nice day!

At SoutheastCon 2010 Charger IEEE placed 5th out of 44 teams in the hardware competition. This years robot had to navigate a circular track using only power collected from solar energy. The robot could not use batteries or have any stored energy for the competition. To get points the robot had to go through a 8″ high height barrier and a 8″ wide width barrier. In total we scored 101 points.
